Illustrators Survey 2008

In 2004, we asked you to take part in a survey focusing on AOI membership and services. Nearly 250 of you took part and the results have been greatly influential in improving our services and marketing in recent years. The AOI today has more than 1,300 members (on par with the Eighties during the Golden Age of illustration), has launched a highly successful illustration magazine loved around the globe by illustrators and graphic designers alike, and established Pro-Action, a campaigning committee that continues to challenge commissioners who have succumbed to bad contract practice.
Today, we would like to ask you once again to spare some time and complete the questionnaire. This time we will mainly focus on your experience in the market place (as well as ask some questions about our services). The results will be part of a European-wide survey of the illustrator ‘s profession (compiled by the European Illustrators Forum) and will be used to campaign for better legislation and improve the standards of the profession.

Q.18 How do you rate the current market conditions for illustrators?
(1=completely agree to 5=completely disagree)

Fees are lower today than 2 years ago

Fees are stagnant

Fees are higher than 2 years ago

I have come across retrospective terms and conditions in the last two years (where commissioners change terms and conditions of contract after artwork was delivered)

I have come across rights grabs in contracts in the last two years (where commissioners ask for full copyright without appropriate payment)

My clients never pay in time (usually 30 days from invoice)

I have come across clients that haven’t paid during the last two years

I am thinking of leaving the profession due to dire market conditions

I think being an illustrator is very satisfying and I can earn enough money to make a decent living

Q.19 How well do you deal with ethical/contract issues? Please remember, this survey is anonymous and truthful responses are very valuable.

I understand all the documents/license agreements presented by commissioners and can point out rights grabs and other clauses that may cause me to lose business in the future.

I don’t read the documents/license agreements presented to me by commissioners

I sign all documents as I’m concerned that I will loose the job if I question unfavourable contracts/agreements.

I always confirm commissions in writing by email or using the AOI’s commission form
