This Head to Had event presents well known illustrators Jenny Bowers (Peepshow) and Garry Parsons, who create imagery for a broad spectrum of high profile commissioners, including editorial, children’s books, broadcasting and design.

They will be talking about their work, careers, motivations, and how they find work. The evening also includes discussions moderated by Rod Hunt, covering a range of topics, including, Have you compromised your ethics for money? Do you feel the need to adapt for the future? How do you deal with clients, and other issues raised from the audience.


2011 V&A Illustration Awards

Entries are now being accepted for the 2011 V&A Illustration Awards competition.  These can be submitted here.

The closing date for entries is 13th December 2010 and online entries only will be accepted.  Entrants may submit as many publications as they wish – there is no entry cost.


A shortlist will be drawn up by judges in March 2011 with final decisions on winners taking place in April based on the printed versions of the publications.

As well as cash prizes the V&A has also been awarding paid commissions to winners in recent years. Note that in the terms and conditions that you agree to waive moral rights in respect of certain specified purposes.

Speaker Alex Jenkins is an Interactive Director with a background in Animation, illustration, and Graphic Design. He has worked for industry recognised Digital Production houses unit9 and B-Reel and is currently ATTIK UK’s Digital Director. Alex’s role is to bring digital innovation to the agency’s offering.

Throughout his career Alex has collaborated with numerous cross-disciplinary agencies worldwide, helping them develop and deliver digital campaigns for clients including Adobe, Carphone Warehouse, Virgin, Gotmilk?, Philips and Doritos.

His commercial work has received recognition from industry awards, including Cannes Lions, The Webbies, BIMA, FITC, Flash Forward, The One Show and The Director’s Club.

Alex has spoken at Design conferences, OFFF, Future of Web Design and Flash on the Beach, spoken for Adobe Inspired media and he continues to mentor Animation students for Central Saint Martins.

Getting inside The Outsider
Deadline for entries is 10 January 2011


House of Illustration and The Folio Society have launched an new competition with the chance to win a Folio commission illustrating Albert Camus’s The Outsider.

This inaugural online competition requires entrants to submit three illustrations and a binding design. Entrants must be over the age of 18 and not already Folio Society published illustrators.

The winner will receive a £4,000 Folio commission to complete a collection of seven illustrations for the book, which will be published by The Folio Society in the autumn of 2011.

Five runners up will each receive a £500 cash prize, and a minimum of three of the six prizes will go to students.

Flora Craig, the House of Illustration’s Project Director, said: ‘This is an extremely exciting initiative for both the House of Illustration and The Folio Society. A unique chance for established and emerging illustrators alike, we hope to encourage and help launch the careers of the best new illustration talent.’

The judges for the prize will include internationally acclaimed illustrator Quentin Blake, renowned British writer and actor, Simon Callow and illustrator, Laura Carlin.

The winners will be announced at the beginning of February 2011. Please take note of the terms and conditions of entry. For example they do ask for the right to crop images ‘if necessary’.
