Daryl Waller is a Cornish Artist and Illustrator who studied at the Royal Collage of Art. Since graduating in 2003 he has worked on various projects such album covers, music video promos and is Kneehigh Theatres in house Illustrator. He has exhibited his artwork internationally in various galleries and runs a small label called Flawedcore Records.
Tom was a name given to a character that reoccurred in one of his childhood dreams. He drew the character time and time again then. The work ended when he made this video piece for a gallery exhibit in 2005.
BRIEF: Create a striking black & white t-shirt design for Uniqlo.
MATERIALS: Black ink on white paper.
RESEARCH: Wading through my Mothers attic at 2am.
PROCESS: Draw a face from reoccurring childhood dream.
INSIGHT: In 2002 I was invited to travel to China and visit the Uniqlo factory to see the t-shirt put through production. This was an overwhelming experience. The Factory seemed bigger than my home city (Truro, Cornwall).
NUMBERS: 10,000: the number of employees at the Uniqlo factory, Ningbo, China.
AFTERWORDS: This opened my eyes to the world of mass production.
